Loukoumades (Greek donuts) are a household favorite and all the time transport me again to festivals I visited as a baby in Cyprus, while on trip.
Gentle, fluffy and sticky, these mini donuts take just a little extra time to make than a few of my different recipes right here (I like to go away the dough to relaxation in a single day for the perfect outcomes) however they’re properly price it! These are historically made on January sixth. On that date, the Christmas holidays in Greece and Cyprus formally come to an finish with the ‘competition of sunshine‘ (‘ton foton’ in Greek), also referred to as Epiphany. This feast day within the Greek Orthodox Church is called ‘Theophania’ which suggests ‘a imaginative and prescient of God’ or ‘Christ shining by way of’. It’s supersitious to throw these donuts onto the roof of your own home to keep at bay the ‘evil eye’ and dangerous vibes. We admittedly didn’t throw them on our roof however we did eat all of them!
My recipe is impressed by the one here. Let me know if you happen to make them!
Components:
- 2 packets dry yeast
- 2 cups lukewarm water
- 1 cup lukewarm milk (of selection)
- 4 cups white flour
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 1⁄2 teaspoon sea salt
- 2 tablespoons mild olive oil
- oil for frying
-
Garnish
- 1 cup honey (we like Manuka)
- 1⁄4 cup water
- cinammon cloves
- floor cinammon
- icing sugar for dusting
Methodology:
Dissolve the yeast within the lukewarm water. Add it to a big bowl with the milk, flour, sugar, salt and oil, stirring it right into a batter.
Cowl the bowl with a tea towel and let it relaxation for a few hours or in a single day as I prefer to.
The next day, warmth the oil for frying in a big saucepan and check the warmth by including just a little little bit of dough. If it sizzles, it’s prepared! Add a number of spherical balls leaving sufficient room for frying. They need to not contact each other. Fry till golden brown and take away onto a plate to chill. Add all of the dough balls till they’re cooked.
In a small pan, make the honey syrup warming the water, honey and cinammon collectively. Take away the cloves as soon as the syrup is effervescent.
Pour over the donuts and mud with icing sugar. Yum!
